Ashley Craig visits iconic sites in DC and attends a McCain/Palin Rally. Read more!

Hello Montreat!

Well, its my second week in Washington,D.C! This week has been crazy. We took a tour of some of the monuments at night. Here are some pictures of them.

The first is the Thomas Jefferson Memorial building, the second is the statue of Thomas Jefferson, it’s huge!

The next picture is me in front of the waterfalls at the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial.

There was also a section dedicated to the Great Depression. In the next picture you see me and a few of my classmates join the line of statues of people from the Depression.

Next we visited the WW II Memorial. You can see the two fountains that are in the middle of the Memorial. They are surrounded by columns with names of the states on them.

Here is a picture of the North Carolina pillar.

The last one we visited that night was the Washington Memorial. You have probably seen pictures of this one in movies but I never thought it was this big! Here are some pictures of the Washington Memorial. The first is a picture of the memorial.

The second you can see how big the monument is compared to us. The two figures at the bottom are a couple of my classmates and they are around 6 ft. tall! This trip was on Friday of last week.

On Monday we went to the Holocaust Museum. They have 20 hours worth of information in the museum. We only spent 2 hours there but I could have easily spent all day. When you first go in they give you an identification card that has a name and a story about one person who was a victim of the Holocaust. Some survived, most did not. Mine was a mother of three that was killed in a gas chamber in 1942. We saw movies about Hitler and the propaganda that he used to win people over to his side. One thing I found really interesting was the part about the American Response to what was going on in Germany. I found out that Germany held the Olympics in 1936 right after Hitler came to power! There was a debate then too about if our athletes should go. We went and two of our players were Jewish and were not allowed to participate. Yet, Jesse Owens, an African American, won 4 gold medals. Everyone came back with the impression that Germany was a peaceful, thriving country. A few years later Hitler was sending people to concentration camps. This struck me because it made me think about the Bejing Olympics this year. Anyway, this had a huge impact on me.

Then on Wednesday about 12 of us went to the McCain and Palin ralley in Virgina! We actually got to see and hear Sarah Palin and John McCain speak. Fred Thompson made an apperance as well! You could feel the excitment of the rally, and when Palin spoke everybody was cheering after almost every sentence! Now, unfortunately my camera is not the best in the world so it might be hard to see these pictures. The first picture is of Sarah Palin speaking! She said pretty much the same thing as she said during the Convention. If you have not watched that you should! The next is Mrs.McCain speaking, she is wearing a green suit and looks stylish as usual. The last is John McCain speaking. Then the last picture I have is proof that I was there is a picture of me holding one of the McCain/ Palin signs they were giving out. It was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed hearing the candidates speak and listening to the crowd's reaction. So, as you can see it has been an exhausting but fun week!
