Women's Soccer Falls to NGU in Double OT

Montreat women’s soccer team fell late in double overtime on Wednesday eveningto North Greenville College 2-1. The game started out slow for both teams. North Greenville got on the board first in the fifth minute and led 1-0 at halftime. At the 53:46 mark in the second half Montreat got on the board with a goal from Brittany Zachrich (FR, Hickory, NC), assist from Alex Mash (FR, Cooper City, FL). The rest of regulation was a defensive battle, ending in a 1-1 tie and forcing overtime. The first overtime picked up where the second half ended. Both teams battled ten extra minutes only to go into the second overtime tied 1-1. Unfortunately for Montreat, the North Greenville offense found a small gap in the defense and got the game winning goal with 3:28 to play in the second overtime.

Coach Maples had some great things to say about his team’s performance, “Tough game to drop at home. It was a very good game to watch, we had more time of possession, our defense played outstanding and to have one moment when we lose that focus and it cost us is hard. They outshot us 12-8 and our slow first half where we only had two shots put us behind plus a soft goal. We just don’t pull the trigger soon enough and the opportunity is lost or we make one pass that should have been a shot. We also have to find the ability to cross the ball to get some opportunities. We are learning that part of the game and when we get it…we will be a much more dangerous team scoring wise. The whole team played hard. That hard nosed, physical, blue collar work rate we have been looking for came out tonight. The ladies were bodying up, slide tackling to stop a play, winning possession or keeping possession, winning headers…basically taking those physical challenges we need to make a difference. Right now I have seen no one handle our pressure when we organize it correctly. We play a very aggressive defense and we have to be willing to give up goals for the sake of scoring. But when we don’t capitalize on our opportunities by either squandering or just not shooting, it puts pressure on our back three of Katie McGary, Haley Eddy and Leah Mummert to keep the team in it.”

"We look forward to rebounding against Cumberland this Saturday," repled Maples. "I hope the team comes out mad like they did after the SWU loss and really takes it to them.”

The Lady Cavaliers will take on Cumberland University on Saturday in Lebanon, TN.
