Montreat College offers a Bachelor of Arts or Science in American Studies. 
 
American StudiesThe American Studies major is an interdisciplinary program with courses in American literature, social institutions, economic development, religious life, political science, and other related areas. 

As part of the program, students have the opportunity to do original research with specific facets of life in the United States, including its variety of subcultures.


Students graduating in American Studies are prepared for a range of careers or graduate study in law, criminology, ministry, history, sociology, and related areas.
 


1. Courses required for the general education core (50 hours)

2. Bachelor of Arts: Successful completion of the intermediate level of French, Greek, Spanish, or other approved language (12 hours or equivalent) OR
Bachelor of Science: 12 semester hours selected from the following courses:
Astronomy, Biology, Business 209, 303, 307, 309 (6 hours maximum), Chemistry, Computer Science 102, 204, Environmental Studies, Mathematics (142 or above), Physics.
NOTE: These courses may not be applied to the general education core, the major, or the minor requirements.

3. Required courses in the major (42 hours): 
American Studies 401 (3)
Business 101 (3)
English 321 (3), 322 (3), 323 (3)
History 201 (3), 202 (3), 490 (3); plus 15 hours from the following: 303 (3), 304 (3), 309 (3), 401 (3), 402 (3), 407 (3), 409 (3), 480 (3)
Political Science 201 (3)

4.  Electives selected from among the following courses (9 hours) or other courses selected in consultation with the advisor:
Business 203 (3), 204 (3)
Cross-Cultural Studies 201 (3)
General Education 441 (3), 461 (3)
History 404 (3), 480 (3)
Interdisciplinary Studies 202 (3)
Sociology 204 (3), 205 (3)

5. General electives to bring total to 126 semester hours. Refer to "Requirements for Bachelor Degrees" in the Catalog for more information.

6. All American studies majors are required to take the Major Field Test (MFT) in their discipline prior to graduation.
