"Montreat is truly a unique experience. It is a community filled with teachers who care about their students and create learning experiences relevant to their lives."

Janelle Shafer '99

Ecosystems7.  The Environmental Studies Program Prepares Students for a Variety of Career Opportunities.
The Environmental Studies program curriculum is designed to prepare students for a variety of career opportunities including:  State and federal environmental agencies, private environmental consulting firms, public and private environmental education programs, and scientific laboratories.

8.  As a Student, You will be Mentored by Faculty According to Your Areas of Interest.
The faculty have diverse backgrounds and exhibit a wide range of interests. Our faculty currently include a certified wilderness education instructor, and two North Carolina State certified Environmental Educators.

Ecosystems9.  The Environmental Studies Program Allows Students to Immerse Themselves in Intensive Place-Based Courses Specific to Certain Ecosystems.
This field-based experiential approach involves learning about the natural environment while being immersed in it. This approach is best reflected in the course American Ecosystems − a three and a half week summer course whereby students travel through the major parks of the west. The places studied have included the following national parks and natural areas:

Mountains 1. The Program is Distinctively Christian in its Orientation
Classes are conducted with frequent reference to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

2. Class Sizes are Small, Providing Opportunity for Interaction and Discussion.

3. Montreat College is Situated within the Ecologically Diverse Southern Appalachian Mountains.
Located in one of the most ideal areas for environmental studies in the eastern United States, the college is in close proximity to four major wilderness areas, several national forests, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Mt. Mitchell State Park, Grandfather Mountain, and numerous unique and diverse ecosystems. These range from southern Appalachian cove forests to heath bald communities to high elevation spruce-fir forests.

ES4. The Environmental Studies Curriculum is Broad in Scope
In addition to biology ecology, geography, hydrology, and climatology, the program of study includes coursework in natural history, environmental philosophy & theology, nature literature, and environmental policy & law. The Environmental Studies Program also offers an independent concentration for students whose primary interests are outside the regular course offerings. Students may transfer courses from other institutions or other departments at Montreat College that can be integrated into a cohesive program of study. This concentration is very unique in that it allows the student to design a program of study specific to his/her area of interest. Past examples include programs in sustainable agriculture, watershed studies, hydrology, and geology.

5.  The Environmental Studies Program Successfully Prepares Students for Graduate School.
The Environmental Studies program curriculum is designed to prepare students for graduate studies in a wide array of academic disciplines including environmental studies, plant and animal ecology, physical geography, environmental education, forest science, wildlife and fishery science, and natural resources management.  Former students are currently doing successful work in environmental graduate programs around the country including the University of Colorado, University of Montana, and the University of Washington. In addition, we have several former students go into doctoral work in medical research.

6.  The Environmental Studies Program Provides Numerous Opportunities for Interaction with Environmental Agencies.
The Environmental Studies Program has established collaborative relationships with several State and Federal Agencies in the region including the Forest Service, the National Park Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and various state parks. These relationships allow students to gain professional experience as they participate in various projects and internships.
