Aron Gabriel - 2003 Inductee

Aron Gabriel was born on June 22, 1974, in Statesville, NC to Archie and Judy Gabriel. He grew up in Catawba County and graduated from Bandys High School in 1992. He was a member of three conference championship basketball teams at Bandys and competed in the regional championship in his sophomore and junior years. He was a three-sport All-Conference player his senior year in cross-country, basketball and track. He was also honored as the WCNC (Charlotte) Student Athlete of the Year in basketball.

Aron entered Montreat College in 1992 and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in English education four years later. He made the Dean’s List every semester and served as President of the Montreat chapter of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. He was on the conference All-Academic team for three years and was selected an NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete his junior and senior years.

Aron Gabriel finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in Montreat Cavalier history with 1,340 points. He held eleven school records including points scored in a game, season, and career; most three pointers made in a game (11); most games played, and most steals in a career.

As a senior, he averaged 17 points and led the team in steals and scoring. He established school records for most three-pointers in a game twice in two weeks (made 9 and then 11). He also shot 82% from the free-throw line. He was selected to the 1994 All-Conference Team.

Upon graduation, he accepted a position as JV boys basketball coach at East Lincoln High School. The next year, he was named the Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach and teacher at his alma mater, Bandys High School. Over the next five seasons he led Bandys to the most wins in school history (18) and their first trip to the state playoffs in ten years.

Aron has recently given up coaching and is now serving as the principal of the Springs Academy in Barium Springs, NC. He is married to the former Amanda Smyre and they have recently had their first child, Trysten.
