Rob Brendle joins Men's Basketball Staff

Coach Bill Robinson has announced the hiring of Rob Brendle, former head coach of Mayland Community College, as his newest assistant. Brendle comes to Montreat after leading the Mayland Community College men’s basketball program to second in the Western Tarheel Conference the past three seasons. During his five seasons at Mayland, Coach Brendle also advanced his Lions to the Region X Semi-Final Championship Game, culminating a 56-50 collegiate record.

One of Brendle’s highlights at Mayland came last year as his Lions defeated the #4 nationally ranked team on their own home court.  Prior to MCC, Brendle helped build one of the top private school programs in the state, Victory Christian.  While at VC, Coach Brendle and Head Coach Ric Franklin, led them to a 98-38 record and two back-to-back NACA National Champioshiops, with 17 of those players going on to play college basketball.  Brendle, however, is thrilled about his future colleagues and Montreat College.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to join Coach Robinson’s staff.  I’ve known [Bill] and Coach Bennett for quite a while.  I’ve always respected them very much and what Coach Robinson has accomplished at Montreat.  He’s a great basketball coach, family man, and is a great Christian influence on his players,” said Coach Brendle.

After the Cavs finshed 19-13 overall last season, and 16-5 in the AAC, Coach Robinson realizes the importance of recruiting and the work ethic required to remain a strong conference championship contender, which is one reason he hired Coach Brendle.

“I’ve had the opportunity to know Rob as we’ve coached against each other.  I truly respect his knowledge of the game.  But, where I think he will be invaluable is in recruiting… I would say he is one of the best, if not the best, basketball recruiters in western North Carolina.  I think he really understands where we are going with Montreat College basketball and the type of kid we’re looking for.  Spiritually and character-wise, he is a perfect fit for Montreat,” added Coach Robinson.
