Men's Basketball opens season with two tough losses on the road
The Cavalier basketball team opened their 2007 season on the road as they played Asbury College and Kentucky Christian University this weekend. The Cavs begin their season 0-2 as they fell to Asbury 86-78 and to Kentucky Christian 97-82. "We played well," said Head Coach Bill Robinson, "we were down thirteen at half against Asbury, and cut it down to six. I felt we had a chance but they were able to make the shots toward the end. Also, we were out rebounded tonight." The Cavaliers had 12 less rebounds than Asbury and only shot 41% from the floor, compared to Asbury's 55%.
Kinard Barnett led all Cavalier scorers in the Asbury game with 27 points, shooting 6 for 8 from behind the arc. MJ Njoku had 15 points, shooting 6 for 7 from the floor.
For the Kentucky Christian game, Montreat also trailed at the halfway mark by only three points. However the Knights of KCU came out hitting eight 3-pointers in the second half, for a total of 15 3-pointers for the game. Thomas Nicholson had a great night as he earned 31 points and 9 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Kinard Barnett hit his first double-double of the season by scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Montreat continues basketball action next Tuesday, November 13th, as they host Southern Wesleyan University at McAlister Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm.
