Montreat suffers a tough one point loss to Covenant

The men’s basketball game between the Montreat Cavaliers and the Covenant Scots was blasted open by Timothy Harper as he energetically tore onto the court scoring nine points within the first minute of the competition. The quick and aggressive opening from Montreat streamlined energy into the first period making it a fast paced and consistently close match as the Scots raced to match the Cavaliers offensive. As the game progressed neither team gave an inch of ground to the other. Three minutes went by and Montreat had only managed to gain a two point lead of 13-11, then seven minutes passed and the score was 19-17. The exciting tension continued to mount without mercy on the poor audience as with eight minutes left in the first period the Cavaliers led by only one point with a score of 21-20.

Then began the maddening back and forth rising and falling as the Scots would take the lead by only a few points and then lose it again only to regain it shortly after until finally, with only fifty seconds left in the period, Covenant led by one point, 36-35. When the period ended Covenant held onto a razor thin lead of 39-37

Going into the second period Matthew Njoku and Kinard Barnett opened strong with a series of scores for Montreat as Covenant  fought back hard until with twelve minutes left the Cavaliers were down 56-55 and poised to take control. It was Njoku that smashed through the barrier and gave his team a 61-56 lead. Covenant didn’t give the Cavaliers a chance to expand the gap but instead game back aggressively and  plunged the match into an edge of the seat game of back and forth as the lead passed back and forth at a fever pitch. Finally within the last 30 seconds of the game Covenant scored the last basket to win by one point.

"It's a very disappointing loss," said Coach Robinson, "The guys played very hard but Covenant shot the ball great.   You have to give them credit. We just can't commit 25 turnovers and expect to win. This is the third game this year where we needed one defensive stop at the end of the game in order to win and haven't been able to get it. We just need to get better."

The game was fast paced and got the audience enthusiastically involved as the two teams battled mercilessly for the win. The strong opening from Harper and the last minute scoring from Njoku made both players shine in last night’s game as the Cavaliers held their ground in a team effort against a fierce opposition.
