Coach Robinson is steadfast in his recruiting as he’s added another stellar player to next year’s roster. His newest recruit is Cherryville High School product, Tyler Buff. Buff comes to Montreat as a highly decorated athlete, excelling in basketball, baseball, and cross country. Buff helped his Cherryville Ironmen earn a final 3rd place state ranking. He was named to the All-Southern Piedmont Conference Team, and voted Defensive MVP for the Ironmen. Buff also led his team in charges drawn and steals, averaging 3.6 steals per game and shooting 40.1% from the three point line. In Tyler’s four years at Cherryville High, he helped guide the Ironmen to a 95-21 record. With Coach Robinson’s teams winning an unprecedented four Champions of Character Award, Tyler Buff has the pedigree to fit right into Robinson’s teams. Tyler is a member of the National Honor Society, earned the Boy Scouts of America’s highest honor when he was named Eagle Scout in 2004, and he had perfect attendance in school for 13 years! Coach Bill Robinson didn't have to travel far to find two standout players to join his already talented Montreat College squad. Just down Old Fort Mountain, seniors Cameron Hayes and Dustin Harris have been quietly putting together impressive high school basketball resumes. Hayes and Harris, who have attended Marion Christian for three and two years respectively, have helped the Knights dominate CCAA (Carolinas Christian Athletic Association) conference play for the past two years and have had solid individual performances against stronger non-conference opponents. Both players made their commitments to Montreat official last Friday in a ceremony at Marion Christian Academy. Read More

Coach Bill Robinson and his Cavaliers concluded their 2008 season last night at the AAC Basketball Tournament, in Bristol, TN. Montreat fell to Tennessee Wesleyan College, 67-76 in the second round. The team was lead by MJ Njoku with 28 points. Montreat struggled from the 3-point line, going 9-for-31 (29%). However, Coach Robinson and his team garnered a few accolades prior to exiting the AAC tournament. They were named the 2008 AAC Men's Basketball Champions of Character Team. This is a tremendous honor for the Cavalier team, as this is the fourth consecutive year they've earned such honor. The award is given to the team that most represents the five characteristics of the Champions of Character initiative set forth by the NAIA: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship. Coach Robinson could not have asked for a better way to send off his seniors than with the Cavaliers' five point win over AAC foe Milligan College, 83-78. With the win, Montreat receives a first round bye in the AAC tournament. "What a great way to end the regular season," exclaimed Coach Robinson, "Senior Stephen Whiteside had a career night [22 points] making two huge plays late when we were down. His three-pointer cut the lead to two. Then he stole the inbounds pass and made a lay-up to tie the game." The senior trio of Whiteside, Collazo, and Barnett combined for 51 points and 11 rebounds. Whiteside also managed to be a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Montreat shot a tremendous 93% from the line (13-for-14). "The atmosphere in McAlister was just incredible," added Robinson, "it was a standing-room-only crowd. I was so proud of our seniors tonight." Read More

Kinard Barnett (Sr., Charlotte, NC) had another stellar night for the Cavalier basketball squad, scoring 21 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out three assists; however, it was not enough to hold off Tennessee Wesleyan, as Montreat dropped a tough AAC contest, 73-86. MJ Njoku and senior Aaron Collazo were the other two Cavaliers to hit double-digits. Njoku had 16 for the night, while Collazo earned 11 of his own off of 4-for-11 shooting. Montreat was out-rebounded 38-23 and shot a total 41% from the floor, compared to Tennessee Wesleyan's 54%. Read More

The Cavaliers again showed why playing in McAlister Gymnasium isn't a favorite stop for many AAC teams. They utilized a balanced offense and hit the boards hard as they defeated UVA-Wise, 88-70. Leading the way with points was Junior forward, MJ Nkoku (Rochester, NY). Njoku's 21 points led all scorers in the game, though it was Kinard Barnett (Sr., Charlotte, NC) who had an all-around stellar night as he dished in 17 points, earned four assists, and pulled down six important defensive rebounds. Other standout performances came from Timothy Harper's (So., Conover, NC) 11 points off a perfect 2-for-2 from the 3-point line and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. Senior Aaron Collazo (Asheville, NC) also shined in the win by contributing 11 points as well, with two assists and one steal. Read More

The men’s basketball game between the Montreat Cavaliers and the Covenant Scots was blasted open by Timothy Harper as he energetically tore onto the court scoring nine points within the first minute of the competition. The quick and aggressive opening from Montreat streamlined energy into the first period making it a fast paced and consistently close match as the Scots raced to match the Cavaliers offensive. As the game progressed neither team gave an inch of ground to the other. Three minutes went by and Montreat had only managed to gain a two point lead of 13-11, then seven minutes passed and the score was 19-17. The exciting tension continued to mount without mercy on the poor audience as with eight minutes left in the first period the Cavaliers led by only one point with a score of 21-20. Read More

Montreat College earned an important AAC win this weekend on the road as they handled Bryan College, 74-59. Njoku was 8-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-8 from the free throw line for a total of 20 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Montreat shot 47% from the floor against Bryan College; the Cavaliers managed to hold Bryan to 39% shooting and an astounding 1-for-16 (6%) from the 3-point line. Kinard Barnett (Sr., Charlotte, NC) and Aaron Collazo (Sr., Asheville, NC) also found a double-digit scoring night against the Lions. Barnett had 15 points off 6-of-14 shooting, while Collazo hit 10 of his own and earned 4 steals for the night. Read More

Montreat suffered a heartbreaking last minute loss to Union College on Saturday, 73-74. The Cavaliers held on to a single digit lead going into the final minutes of the game, though it proved to not be enough, as Union's Aaron Dunaway delivered the final 3-point blow with less than 10 seconds remaining. "It was a heartbreaking loss," said Coach Bill Robinson, "we were just one stop away from winning a big game on the road. I thought our small lead there at the end would be enough, but again, we didn't get one of those important stops when we needed to." Montreat is now 9-13 and 6-5 in the AAC. Once again leading Montreat against the Bulldogs of Union College was MJ Njoku. He dished in 22 points off of 7-of-10 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the stripe. Read More

Montreat continues to provide its home crowd with great entertainment as they defeated Virginia Intermont College this weekend at McAlister Gymnasium, 93-81. The Cavs fell to VIC earlier this year on the road, but since then has been working its way toward the top of the AAC rankings. Against VIC, it was Senior forward Kinard Barnett (Charlotte, NC) that led the way for Montreat with a near triple-double; Barnett dished in 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds; he was 7-of-8 from the free throw line and 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Barnett also handed out eight assists, and for his sensational play, he was named the Cavalier Player of the Game. Read More

The Cavalier basketball team managed to win their second consecutive game on the road this season after their 79-66 victory over Warren Wilson College. Montreat is coming off of a bizarre win over AAC contender Milligan College. Although Coach Robinson wasn't too pleased with the overall effort against Warren Wilson, Montreat managed to climb to 8-12 for the season. "I felt our effort tonight was a little disappointing," said Robinson. Disappointed or not, Coach Robinson has to be excited about the way MJ Njoku is playing as of late. In the past four games, Njoku has come to the forefront with his leadership on the floor. For those efforts he was named this week's AAC Player of the Week. Njoku led Montreat over WWC with 21 points of 9-12 shooting. Read More

Aaron Collazo and AAC Player of the Week MJ Njoku led Montreat College past Milligan, giving them a invigorating and much needed road conference win, 62-61. However, it was Kinard Barnett that delivered the lethal blow in the final seconds to seal the win. Collazo was 4-for-13 from the floor, 4-for-4 from the stripe, including 2-for-7 from 3-point range for a total of 14 points and two rebounds. Njoku had another stellar night as he was 5-for-7 overall, perfect from the 3-point line (1-1) and the free throw line (2-2) for a total of 13 points and three rebounds. Montreat presented great team defense as they held Milligan to only one double figure scorer in guard Derrick Nave (13 points). "We've played some tight and bizarre games, but this one had the most bizarre ending to it," said Head Coach Bill Robinson. Read More

Montreat put on a display of determination in front of their loyal home crowd at McAlister Gymnasium but in the end, Bluefield handed Montreat its first home lose of the season, 109-105. Bluefield entered the game as the #1 ranked team in the AAC, leading the nation in scoring average (94 points per game). The Cavaliers however put up their best offensive night hitting 53% from the field (35-for-66) and 12-for-20 from 3-point range, 10-of-14 coming in the second half. Leading the way for Montreat was this week’s AAC player of the week, MJ Njoku. Njoku was 9-for-12 from the field with 21 points including eight rebounds. Also scoring 21 points for the Cavaliers was Kinard Barnett; he also had four rebounds and was 5-of-8 from the floor, including a great night from the free-throw line, 9-of-11. Read More

For his stellar play against two tough AAC opponents, Tennessee Wesleyan and Bluefield College, Matthew "MJ" Njoku was named this week AAC player of the week. Njoku helped Montreat get past Tennessee Wesleyan last week, helping the Cavaliers stay unbeaten at home. Njoku earned 18 points and seven rebounds against TWC. This past weekend, against the #1 team in the AAC, Njoku hit 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds; Montreat dropped its first home game of the season against Bluefield, 109-105. MJ is Montreat's second AAC Player of the Week honoree for the current season; earlier this month, Chazaree Wright earned the same honor for the women's basketball team. Coach Robinson recently had these words to say about Njoku, "MJ is coming off of two of his best games. He is one of our best defenders and can really get to rim and finish."

The Cavaliers remain a perfect 5-0 at home thanks to stellar play by #11 sophomore guard Tim Harper (Conover, NC). Montreat handed AAC foe Tennessee Wesleyan College a tough loss, 91-67, in front of a packed McAlister crowd. From the early part of the game, it was the Tim Harper Show as he led all scorers with 22 points, shooting an amazing 9-for-10 from the field, including 2-for-3 from behind the arc. Harper also had four rebounds, was 2-for-4 from the stripe, had one assist, one block, and one steal in only 24 minutes of play. For his all-around effort, Tim Harper was selected as the Cavalier Player of the Game. Read More

In the battle of the Cavaliers, Montreat wasn't able to hold off a deep bench against the Cavs of UVA-Wise, as they fell 67-90. Coach Robinson's men continue to work diligently to find that winning formula on the road; they do however, manage to remain perfect while playing at McAlister Gymnasium this season. Senior forward Kinard Barnett (Charlotte, NC) led Montreat with 19 points, five rebounds, including a perfect 9-of-9 from the stripe. Montreat was held to 40% shooting while UVA-Wise shot nearly 52%. Montreat was once again outrebounded 41-32. Read More

Led by 6-5 senior guard Thomas Nicholson (Troutman, NC), Montreat dropped a tough contest against one of the top teams in the AAC, King College, 58-76. The loss gives the Cavaliers a 5-10 overall record, but still leaves them one game back in the AAC polls, with a 3-2 conference record. Nicholson had 27 points on the night. One of the lopsided stats for the night was once again rebounding; the Cavs were outrebounded 47-28 by the Tornadoes. Though both teams didn't have their best night of shooting percentage, King College edged Montreat out 40% to 37%. Montreat was only 6-for-11 from the stripe, while King College shot 81% (17-for-21). Aaron Collazo and Thomas Nicholson were the only two double digit scorers for Montreat with 21 and 12 points, as William & Mary dominated the inside game in their 87-52 point win over Montreat. The Tribe outscored the Cavs 48-4 in the paint, and outrebounded Montreat 48-24. “We played pretty tough for the first fifteen minutes,” said Head Coach Bill Robinson, “unfortunately, we only shot twenty-nine percent. We can’t win too many games shooting like that, especially against a team of this caliber.” With nearly five minutes remaining in the first half, Montreat kept the game within four points (28-24), before the Tribe went on a 14 point run. The Cavaliers traveled to Lookout Mountain, GA this weekend to take on the Scots of Covenant College and returned home with a 66-63 victory. The win now gives Montreat a 5-6 overall record. It also gives them a 3-1 AAC record, which ties them for first place in the conference. The game sat at 29 apiece at the half, though behind Thomas Nicholson’s 17 points and 10 rebounds, Montreat was able to pull out the win. Montreat’s Aaron Collazo, who recently surpassed his 1000th career point, dished in 20 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Thomas Nicholson and MJ Njoku provided great contribution with 17 and 16 points of their own. The Cavalier JV basketball team fell on the road last night to Catawba Community College 91-71. The last time Montreat's JV rolled into Hickory, NC, the Cavs suffered a disappointing 64 point loss to CCC. "Obviously, the guys wanted this to be a completely different game," said Head Coach Bill Robinson, "It was evident. They played intensely and with inspiration.” The Cavs only trailed by 11 points at the half, though the depth of the Buccaneer’s bench was too much for the Cavaliers. Read More

If the Cavaliers wanted to find a game to fire up their early season motivation, Saturday night's AAC win over Union College may just be the one. Tied at 39 points at halftime, Montreat put on a shooting clinic in the second half, finding the bottom of the net on all eight 3-point attempts. Coach Robinson's halftime speech awoke the perimeter shooting, as Montreat managed to hit only 1 of 12 3-pointers in the first half. Read More

The JV Cavalier basketball team earned a great victory last night as they defeated a tough Limestone College JV squad, 113-106 on the road. The men were led by Matthew Pride (So., Asheville, NC) and his 14 first half points. Montreat led by 12 at the halfway point (50-38), but Limestone’s 68 second half points made the game rather interesting. Pride’s 25 points, along with AJ Smith’s 21 and Mikie Martin’s 20 gave the Cavaliers 63 of their own second half points, enough to seal the victory. Also having a great night for Montreat was Nate Rooth, who added 15 of his own points and David Whitehead. Whitehead was instrumental in giving the Cavaliers an early game lead by ended the night with 14 points, 12 of them coming in the first half. Read More

Sharp shooting Montreat College fell to VIC last night in an early season AAC matchup. The Cavs shot 50% from the 3-point line (9 of 18) but were once again outrebounded (42-22), which proved to be the deciding statistic for the night. "We played really well all night, except for a four minute period in overtime where we were held to only one point," said Coach Robinson, "We can't give up so many rebounds, that's really hurt us." Kinard Barnett and Thomas Nicholson led Montreat with 19 points each. Barnett also had six rebounds, while Nicholson grabbed five of his own. Read More

We were able to maintain forty minutes of intensity, which we haven’t been able to do yet. It certainly helped to play in front our fans tonight.” Obviously, Aaron Collazo and MJ Njoku felt really comfortable at home as they shot the lights out against a Warrior team that had not lost a game prior to entering McAlister Gymnasium.
