Montreat track team donates to local charity

Yesterday, Friday February 1st, at the Black Mountain Campus the track team had one of its best performances of the year, though it had little to do with racing. The Cavalier track team presented Adam Ripley and his Least-of-These Ministry a check for $500 to be used to purchase much needed food. “This couldn’t have come at a better time. We had a great chapel presentation today centered on compassion,” said Coach Larios, “and so as a team, to provide this small gift to Adam [an ex-Cavalier cross country runner] and his compassionate ministry is very special.” Freshman leader Ben Hall prayed over the presentation asking God to bless the money so that many of Asheville’s homeless could somehow hear the Gospel through Adam’s ministry. Least-of-These is a non-profit organization that was created by Adam and some Montreat students to provide a warm breakfast for the homeless in Asheville. On an average morning, Adam’s ministry provides pancakes, eggs, sausage, and coffee to nearly 150 of Asheville’s homeless population.

“It started out as a conviction that a few friends and I had years back to do something  to serve God’s people,” says Ripley, “but now, so many of those people have become my personal friends.  It’s like going down there and hanging out with friends over breakfast.  It gives us a perfect opportunity to be Christ-like and show compassion.”

The cross country team was able to earn the $500 by hosting the All-Comers Cross Country Challenge in December.  The 5K race started and finished on the Black Mountain Recreation Park and meandered through Montreat’s Black Mountain cross country course.  “We are motivated and inspired by Adam and his willingness to serve in such a great ministry.  As an ex-runner for Montreat, I wanted our runners to see how God can use one simple person to do so much great work in the community.  I am proud of Adam and our runners for working hard to raise this desperately needed money.  Adam believes it’s enough money for over one month’s worth of food; we were excited to hear that,” added Larios.
