Montreat JV Basketball defeats talented Veritas Christian
The Montreat JV earned their second victory of the year tonight with a 64-60 victory over Veritas Christian Academy.
Freshman AJ Smith scored the first eight points for the Cavaliers as Montreat took an early lead. But Veritas fought back to take a 33-31 half-time lead.
Defense was the key for Montreat as they limited 7'1 Clemson-signee Caitlin Baicu to five made field goals on the night. Sophomore Nate Rooth led the defense for the Cavaliers as he was matched-up with Baicu most of the night. Point guard Jonathan Ellington led Veritas with 20 points while Baicu finished with 16.
Smith led all scorers with a career high 23 points and freshman Korey Eller added 17 points and six rebounds. Freshman Mikie Martin added eight points and six assists while Rooth led the team in rebounds with eight.
"I am very pleased with the improvement the team has shown in the last week. They are playing well together as a team and found the will to win late in the game. It was a great team effort tonight."
