Montreat began to press hard and foul late. Down only two points with five seconds left, the defense forced a timely steal and freshman AJ Smith was fouled with just over a second left on the clock. Smith, who led the Cavs with 22 points, calmly knocked down both free throws to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Montreat converted on seven of 12 shots at the free throw line and held Wilkes to just three field goals.
“It was a total team effort,” said Coach Robinson, “we had five players score in double figures, and Daniel Kennedy had his best collegiate game with seventeen points, and three three-pointers.”
Kevin Hanlon added 17 points and 8 rebounds in his return to Montreat. Mikie Martin and Nate Rooth chipped in 14 points each.
For WCC, it was the Brian Poole show. Poole, who leads the country in scoring at the community college level, scored 38 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Point guard Jordan Paris added 20 points, 17 coming in the second half.
The 4th win for the JV Cavaliers is the most in the three year history of the program. They return to action in McAlister next Wednesday night against Caldwell Community at 7pm.
