Coach David Pennell has recently announced the addition of Bedford High School's golf star Savanna Biggs to his 2008 Lady Cavalier roster. Biggs comes to Montreat College as a highly decorated prep golfer from Lambertville, MI. In her senior year as a Bedford Mule, Biggs led her team to qualify for the state championship for the fourth time in a row, and win their first ever Regional Championship. She also led her team to a 9th place finish at the State Finals. For her great consistent play all year, Biggs was selected as 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-Conference, and her school's most outstanding athlete.

Montreat’s Lady Cavaliers made a late charge yesterday at the NAIA Region XII Golf Championships, but were not able to defend their regional title. However, they did manage to finish in third place with a team total of 1128, behind 2008 Champions Tennessee Wesleyan (1078), and runner-up Brescia University (1087). Leading the way for Montreat was Amanda Thompson (93-91-96=280), Amber Cody (91-92-99=282), and Melissa Baker (98-92-92=282). All three of these ladies earned All-AAC Honors. Coach David Pennell couldn’t be more proud of the way his ladies fought back in the final rounds.

The Montreat College Lady Cavalier golf team currently sits in 4th place at the AAC Golf Championship with a team score of 384. Tennessee Wesleyan currently owns the leaderboard at 366. Brecia University sits alone in second two shots back with 368. The tournament is being held at the Tryon Country Club in Tryon, NC. Second round action begins at 11:30am on Tuesday morning. Amber Cody and Amanda Thompson lead the Lady Cavaliers with scores of 91 and 93, respectively.

Coach David Pennell's Cavaliers had a solid day on the links yesterday in the opening round of the Spring Invitational at Crooked Creek Golf Course in Hendersonville, NC. Though the men are unable to field a team score, Cory Howard and Sean Mcaig both fired 80's in the opening round. Currently in the men's division, Union College (KY) leads the tournament with 297. On the women's side, Spartanburg Methodist sits alone in first place with a team total 346. Ashley Mitchem leads the third place Lady Cavs (407) with a opening round of 95.

For the first time in Montreat College golf history, the women’s golf team has garnered national votes for a top 25 ranking. The December 7th ranking has Montreat listed as the 28th ranked women’s golf program in the country. “This is a testament to the development of our program. We’re really excited about this recognition. Obviously, it’s a great recruiting tool because players want to be involved with a winning program,” said Head Coach David Pennell. The Lady Cavaliers sit atop of the NAIA Region XII rankings ahead of second place Tennessee Wesleyan. Last year, Montreat’s ladies won the regional championship, and they looked poised to do so again this season.

Montreat’s Lady Cavs finished 2nd in this weekend’s Spartanburg Methodist College Fall Golf Tournament. Leading the Lady Cavs was sophomore Ashley Mitcham. Mitcham’s two day total 191 (92-99) was good enough for 5th place overall. “I am very pleased with the ladies thus far,” said Coach Dave Pennell, “Looking at our results from this past spring up to this fall’s season, I feel we are ahead of where I thought we would be. We still have to work hard this winter to prepare to defend our NAIA Region XII championship.” The Spartanburg Methodist Tournament ended the fall golf season for the Lady Cavaliers. From last Spring trough this Fall, the Lady Cavaliers have finished 7 tournaments with a record of 1- first place finish, 5- second place finishes, and 1- fourth place finish. Their record for the 2007 Fall season is 6-3. With the second place finish at Spartanburg Methodist, the Lady Cavaliers are the #1 ranked team in Region XII of the NAIA.

Head Golf Coach David Pennell’s Lady Cavs are grinding it out toward another banner season. In their second fall tournament of the season, the Lady Cavs posted a new school scoring record of 351 on Monday as they finished second in the Montreat College Fall Invitational, hosted by the Crooked Creek Golf Course in Hendersonville, NC. The Cavs made a great impression upon AAC competitors as they defeated Tennessee Wesleyan and King College along the way to scoring a tournament total 717. Leading the way for Montreat was freshman Melissa Baker (Clayton, NC) by tallying a 174 (91-83) for the two day tournament. Other scorers were Amber Cody (Marion, NC) who led Montreat after the first day by firing an impressive 83; she ended with a two-day total of 174. Rounding out Montreat’s scorers were Ashley Mitcham (Waynesville, NC) with an 84-95 (179), Amanda Thompson’s 93-92 (185), and Aimee Turner’s 107-98 (205).

Head Coach Dave Pennell is hoping his ladies pick up right where they left off after winning last year’s NAIA Region XII Women’s Golf Championship. This past Thursday, Montreat College hit the links again in the Benedict College Fall Golf Match at Oak Hills Golf Club. Mars Hill (379) took the top team honors on the women’s side, edging out the Lady Cavs (384) by a mere five strokes. “For many having never played the course before, I felt they played very well,” said Coach Dave Pennell.
