Lady Cavs win big against Milligan, 6-3

Montreat defeated the Lady Buffaloes of Milligan College 6-3 in a highly anticipated AAC rematch. “The last few times we have played Milligan, they have beaten us pretty bad,” said Head Coach Dan Woerner, “today’s game was a great example of the focus, effort, and intensity we’ve been talking about demonstrating.” With no one to substitute in the second half, due to injuries, Montreat demonstrated great poise as they climbed to a 6-3 overall record and 2-3 in the AAC. “I think we played the best 45 minutes of soccer that I can remember,” added Woerner, “we moved the ball well… we got out to a great start.” With Milligan scoring in the first two minutes of the game, Coach Woerner may have seen flashbacks of the last few Milligan games. However the Lady Cavs took control of Milligan by scoring five unanswered goals in a span of 15 minutes.

Senior Hannah Davidson scored first in the 13th minute with Amanda Solesbee finding the back of the net twice, once in the 20th minute and the other around the 28th.  The fourth goal of the game came within one minute later from Brittnye Scott, her first of two for the evening.  “Brittnye and Amanda played great today.  Amanda had another hat trick when she scored the only goal of the second half.  They really got out early on Milligan,” said Woerner.

Goal keeper Leah Scroggs’ status was uncertain until 15 minutes prior to game time.  “After Mark [athletic trainer] and I examined her range of motion, we felt she was cleared to play,” added Woerner.  With no substitutions in the second half, Montreat had to shift the line-up in order to find the right formula to prevent fatigue.

“It was a little warm today, and our girls were tired.  This was a great win for them as they demonstrated great intensity and effort.  At the half we discussed that the first half was history and that we needed to go out and finish this game off with that same effort,” said Woerner.

The Lady Cavs host North Greenville College this Saturday as part of Montreat’s Homecoming festivities.  The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
