Lady Cavs defeat AAC rival Union College in Overtime, 2-1
Fittingly, in her final home game of the regular season, Senior Night, Amanda Solesbee hit the game winning goal within two minutes of overtime to defeat the Lady Bulldogs of Union College. That goal was her 49th of her career as a Lady Cavalier and will now be the benchmark for any Montreat lady soccer player to attempt in order to take down the new all-time scoring record. “Both teams knew how important it was to win this game. The winner would clinch home field advantage in the first round of the conference tournament. We talked about how important it would be to play in front of our home crowd,” said Head Coach Dan Woerner, “this win guarantees us the fourth spot in the AAC and home field advantage. We actually will play Union again at home in hopes of advancing in the conference tournament.” Montreat fell behind early in the game when Union capitalized on a defensive miscue.
It was freshman Shannon Olson however that tied the game at 1-1 with a beautiful shot from the top of the penalty box with 16 minutes remaining in regulation. “In the past, we haven’t responded very well after being scored on early in the game. Today was a great win because they had to overcome that statistic and fight back, and beat a solid Union team in overtime,” added Woerner.
Seniors Hannah Davidson, Leah Scroggs, and Amanda Solesbee were honored for their loyalty and leadership as they were recognized in their final home game of the regular season. Montreat soccer and the supportive community appreciate these ladies for their commitment on and off the field.
