Lady Cavs fail to advance in the AAC Soccer Tournament

The Montreat women’s soccer season has come to a halt, though it had some tremendous highlights, including an 11-4-2 final record; scoring 5 or more goals in 7 of their games; Amanda Solesbee breaking the career assist and scoring records; two AAC and one Region Player of the Week honor; and Solesbee’s number two spot in the NAIA record books with the second most assists ever in one game, which ultimately earned her a spot in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd. “I am so blessed to have been a part of this season,” said Head Coach Dan Woerner, “we really had a wonderful group of ladies this year.” The Lady Cavs' 2007 season came to an end yesterday as they lost a heartbreaker to Union College after two tough overtime periods. Union’s goalie was able to defend Hannah Davidson’s penalty kick which gave Union the lead as they capitalized on all of their PK’s. The game did not lack any Montreat heroics however, as Coach Woerner was certain this game would be decided by small miscues, “We were two identical teams. It came down to who made the fewest errors.”

With Montreat falling behind 2-0 in the early part of the game, Amanda Solesbee was able to cut the lead by striking a beautiful free kick with eight minutes remaining in the half.  That goal gave Solesbee her 50th career goal.  Hannah Davidson tied the game on a tremendous header from a Solesbee corner kick.  One example of Montreat’s determination to fight back came later in the game with the regulation period expiring; Montreat’s Kaitlyn Thacker charged out of the goal to defend a stray pass when the ball escaped her grasp and seemed to be heading ever so deliberately toward the Cavalier goal- when Hannah Davidson sprinted after it and cleared it out with a diving kick to keep it tied at two and send the game into overtime.  “It’s always tough to lose on penalty kicks.  It’s never the way you want to lose, but that’s the way it is.  I am so proud of these ladies for not giving up to an early two goal deficit.  It’s hard to fight back in a playoff game- but these girls deserve tons of credit for not panicking and playing their hearts out,” praised Coach Woerner, “Again, we had a wonderful season."

The Lady Cavs would like to thank all the students, faculty, staff, and Montreat community for the tremendous support throughout this 2007 season!
