Cavalier Softball season is in full swing

Interim Head Coach Katie Duvall and her Lady Cavaliers hit the road this past weekend in the team's 2008 debut. "We opened up our season against some rather tough NCAA D-II teams," said Duvall, "in hopes of it preparing us for our conference games later in the year." The Lady Cavs start the season 0-6, though two of the games were lost by only one run. Montreat's first game of the Tusculum Softball Tournament was against Seaton Hill and was one of the one-run games. Shelby English (Fr., Marion, NC) recorded six strikeouts, though was credited with her first loss. Both Haven Payne (Sr., Canton, NC) and Brittany Burns (Sr., Charlotte, NC) went 2-for-3 with one run. The Lady Cavs fell to Seaton Hill, 2-3. Later that day, Montreat went on to lose another tight game, 1-2 to Glenville State. Payne once again had a solid game at the plate, batting .500 (2-for-4). "Amanda Wolfe pitched an amazing game for us," praised Duvall, "unfortunately we fell a little short this game."

In their second day of play, Montreat dropped another two games; Bellarmine defeated Montreat 0-5, and Tusculum came out on top, 3-10.  Freshman Morgan Mills (Fr., Waynesville, NC) had a stellar game against Bellarmine, going 2-for-2 with a double.  Freshman Lacy Robinson (Huntersville, NC) recorded nine strikeouts in her first loss of the season.  In game two versus Tusculum, Mandi Pike (Jr., Burlington, NC)  went 2-for-4.  "This was a rather disappointing series of games," said Coach Duvall, "we were able to get our runners on base, but couldn't find a way to score."

And, in Montreat's first double-header at home, the Lady Cavs fell to Breneau University, 0-6 in game one, and 7-9 in game two.  Shining at the plate in game one was Erin Cross
(So., Morganton, NC) by going 2-for-2, with one walk.  Lacy Robinson earned her second loss of the season.

In game two, it was Haven Payne who once again demonstrated her senior leadership by going 2-for-4 at the plate, including a walk.  Mandi Pike also had a solid game going 3-for-5.  Haven Payne recorded six strikeouts while being credited with the loss.

Montreat continues double-header action this Tuesday, February 12th as they play host to another NCAA team, Mars Hill College; game one begins at 1:00pm.
