Montreat's Lady Cavalier Softball team put on a season-ending show at the 2008 AAC Softball Tournament by taking #1 seed Milligan College to 13 innings. Milligan went on to escape the upset, 2-1, but not before Montreat demonstrated what tournament play was all about. Entering the tournament seeded last (#9), Montreat came up one run shy of playing for the tournament championship, which Milligan ultimately went on to win. The Lady Cavaliers won an unprecedented three games on Thursday to earn the right to play in the semi-final game against Milligan. The NAIA's Region XII #3 ranked Cavaliers swept a doubleheader this past weekend from a solid Seton Hill University, a team who recently competed in the 2006 College World Series. Game one starter Patrick Ballew (Gloucester, VA) would be seeking his first victory of the season as he would try to extend the four game winning streak. Ballew would only surrender three hits while striking out six. He would pick up the victory in a tightly contested game that would stay tied until Adam Speas (Rural Hall, NC) would pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on third and two outs, Speas would lace a double in the right center gap for the go-ahead run and the 4-3 victory. Steven Hoyle (Cherryville, NC) would have a huge game with two homeruns, the second one coming when the Cavaliers were down by one creating a tie and leading to Spea’s heroics in the sixth. Cameron Duckworth (Asheville, NC) would continue to swing a hot bat as he would add two more hits on the day as well. Read More

Montreat College baseball coach Travis Little celebrated his 200th career victory last Saturday, February 23rd, with a 10-0 home win over Salem International University. It is an accomplishment that Little himself marvels at, considering his age. He first became a head baseball coach at age 26, and seven years later, at 33, he achieved this remarkable milestone. Little says, “One of my mentors told me one time that fewer than three percent of coaches become head college baseball coaches before they’re thirty years old. I’ve been so blessed with great mentors and student-athletes. To have reached this milestone, at my age, is amazing. I truly thank all our players for their achievements along the way.” Read More

Junior Garrett Jones (Elwood, IN) threw a no-hitter against Salem International in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. Jones was absolutely dynamic in picking up his first victory of the season as he would propel the Cavaliers to win their third game in a row. Jones faced only three batters above the minimum, while striking out four and only allowing two walks. The left-handed junior college transfer from Kishwaukee College showed why he is regarded as one of the top pitchers in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. "He changes speeds exceptionally well and is very accurate with his fastball," says Assistant Coach Mike Bender. The Cavs will continue to count on Jones to be in the top of the rotation all season. Yesterday's doubleheader against Mars Hill College ended with two losses for the Lady Cavaliers. "Overall, we played well and were able to get our runners on base," said Coach Duvall, "though we just couldn't get them all the way around. We just aren't scoring right now." Game one of the doubleheader witnessed Montreat's Shelby English (Marion, NC) get credited with the loss, though she did manage to record five strike outs against MHC. Amy Vogel, according to Coach Duvall, played "exceptional in both games." Vogel went 1-for-2 with a walk in the 4-9 game-one loss. Read More

Coach Robinson could not have asked for a better way to send off his seniors than with the Cavaliers' five point win over AAC foe Milligan College, 83-78. With the win, Montreat receives a first round bye in the AAC tournament. "What a great way to end the regular season," exclaimed Coach Robinson, "Senior Stephen Whiteside had a career night [22 points] making two huge plays late when we were down. His three-pointer cut the lead to two. Then he stole the inbounds pass and made a lay-up to tie the game." The senior trio of Whiteside, Collazo, and Barnett combined for 51 points and 11 rebounds. Whiteside also managed to be a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Montreat shot a tremendous 93% from the line (13-for-14). "The atmosphere in McAlister was just incredible," added Robinson, "it was a standing-room-only crowd. I was so proud of our seniors tonight." Read More

Her official time of 1:26.59 was an "A" national qualifying standard; in fact, it was nearly six minutes faster than the qualifying standard (1:33). Her performance earned her the right to participate at this year's NAIA National Outdoor Track & Field Championship, in St. Louis, MO, May 22-24. "This is a great honor for Talisa," said Coach Larios. "She's had a few sub-par races this spring so far, so it was great to see her bounce back and run such a tremendous race. Montreat women's basketball Coach Craig Jackson has made a statement this season. With only half the team as most other AAC rosters, Jackson has led his team to a 12-15, and 5-10 conference record, which is a great improvement from recent years- though he contends this is only the beginning. He is well on his way to filling his roster with the talent he believes will take the Lady Cavaliers to the top of the conference. With that goal in mind, Coach Jackson has recently announced the signing of two star players for next year's team; Caitlyn Chambers, a 5-8 senior star from Greenville Tech Charter High School, will be joining her future Lady Cavalier teammate Alicia Wallace, a 6-2 star center from North Surry High School, as Montreat's newest additions. Jackson believes both young ladies will have an immediate impact on the team and in the conference. Read More

Recap of the Lee University doubleheader: The Cavalier's first game saw Patrick Ballew (Gloucester, VA) take the mound against a very good Lee University team that would be ranked fifth in the country. Brent Ashbaugh (Tara, Ontario) would go 2 for 3 in the game. Game two starter Garrett Jones (Elwood, IN) would pitch well but would get no offensive support either as the only run produced would be a first inning homerun by Jesse Wise (Benson, NC).
