Introduction
The Montreat College Office of Safety and Security is responsible for the security of college facilities and safety of the students and staff. The department performs assigned enforcement duties to uphold the college justice system, maintain good order and discipline, and support the college's security requirements throughout all phases of college operations. In order to improve security operations on the campus the administration has elected to change the role of the security department to a campus police. On September 19, 1997, the North Carolina Department of Justice approved the administration's request and certified the Campus Police Department.
In an effort to maintain the highest level of professionalism possible, the Campus Police Department has adopted their own strategic plan. As with all good plans the department will utilize this strategic plan as a departmental guide but will continue to reevaluate and restructure as needed to achieve departmental goals. One may ask why the department is planning. Because planning sets directions for the police department and its operations, it examines the alternate courses of action available to the department, and it helps allocate resources from within the agency. Improved planning leads the department to higher levels of professionalism and improved decision making.
