Baseball team splits with King College
Montreat College split a Conference doubleheader with King College on Monday with Montreat taking the first game 12-5 and losing the second game 4-5. In the first game, the Cavaliers got to the Tornadoes bullpen early by knocking starting pitcher Joey McCown out in the second inning. The Cavaliers put up a six spot with the big blow coming on a grand slam by centerfielder Chad Dawkins. Overall, the Cavaliers would hit four homeruns in the game with Chris Allen, Cam Duckworth and Dane Phillips adding solo shots. Montreat College would finish the game with 15 hits. John Shannon and Seth Blevins would combine for three earned runs and nine strikeouts in the victory.
In game two, Montreat College would face one of the conference’s best pitchers in Jace Smith. King College would hold a 4-1 advantage in the fifth when the Cavaliers would send seven hitters to the plate and with two outs; Steven Hoyle would lace a two RBI double into the right center gap evening the score. The score would remain that way until the top of the seventh when two costly errors would prove to be the difference as King would plate one more run to win the game. Garrett Jones would pitch tremendously but would get no defensive help as all the runs but two were unearned. He would record five strikeouts in the game and only give up five hits. Montreat now stands at 26-9 and 7-3 in Appalachian Athletic Conference.
