I am originally from Old Fort, North Carolina, so I actually grew up almost literally in the shadow of Montreat College.  Being a “local” I had heard of Montreat, of course, but it took several years and lots of experience (good and bad) before I ended up a student at Montreat.  I graduated from McDowell High School and decided to take a “year” off before college, which quickly turned into three years, then five, then ten.  I took a few community college courses occasionally, but never enough to seriously approach a degree.  Then, in 1999, while I was in the middle of one of my infrequent semesters at the local community college, I made the acquaintance of an Army recruiter, who somehow convinced me to join the Army in military intelligence (insert joke here) as a linguist.  I spent five years in the Army, was blessed to learn to speak Russian somewhat well, and even was able to spend some time in Russia, among my other travels (not the least of which was living in Hawaii for three years).

After my time in the Army was done, I came home with a new appreciation for education, and was determined to get my degree.  Through a series of minor and personal miracles, God led me to Montreat College, where I spent two and a half years as a student.  I truly felt called to be here as a student, and when I graduated in December of 2007, an old friend who happened to be the Director of Admissions at Montreat, called to extend an invitation to begin the interview process.  I felt that God told me (almost chuckling) “I called you to be a student here, but I haven’t told you to leave yet!”  So here I am, and I feel extremely blessed to be a part of this team, and to tell people about this wonderful little college, hidden in a little pocket of the wilderness that was so close, and yet so far, from home.
