Louan Gideon to Perform at Montreat College

The Montreat College theater series opens the season with A Side Order of Screwtape – An Evening of Selected Readings and Song, written and performed by Swannanoa resident Louan Gideon. Gideon has recorded original music with local musicians Billy Jonas, Bill Gerhardt, and Patrick Boland for this performance. The readings and songs are all adapted from or inspired by C.S. Lewis’ book, The Screwtape Letters.

Gideon graduated from Baylor University with a theology degree and then organized a jazz / rock band. After spending three years touring with her band, she moved to New York and studied acting, spending time in off-Broadway productions and eventually landing a three-year contract with the soap opera, “Search For Tomorrow.” When the show ended, she went to London to star in a British made-for-television film entitled Where There’s A Will. Gideon would later relocate to Los Angeles.

She has guest-starred in numerous television shows such as “Seinfeld,” “Six Feet Under,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” “Third Rock from the Sun,” and “Joan of Arcadia.” She also acted in several films, including Disney’s P.U.N.K.S and Treehouse Hostage, frequently playing comedic villains. She spent four years playing Danielle Atron, the chemical-plant owning evil-lady in the series “The Secret World of Alex Mack.” “I never booked the sweet housewife roles or the friendly neighbor parts. My characters usually had major anger-management issues and were secretly plotting to kill someone. It makes you wonder about yourself a little – but then, I do find those the most interesting roles to play,” she says.

Louan was asked to return to Baylor several years ago as a guest speaker for University Chapel. It was there that she presented the original version of her Screwtape adaptation. “After that performance was well received, I decided to add some music, taking some of my inspiration from Randy Newman and Stephen Sondheim, both of whose lyrics paint intriguingly flawed characters. I like writing that makes me squirm a little and say to myself, ‘Wow. Is there any part of that character in me? If so, I want to rethink my behavior.’”

The show will begin 8 p.m. on Friday, November 9th, in Gaither Chapel on the Montreat College campus. Tickets are $5 for adults, and admission is free for children and students. The material is most appropriate for those 12 and older, though all are welcome. This event is sponsored by The Settings of Black Mountain. For more information call 828.669.8012, ext. 2778.

Montreat College is a Christ-centered liberal arts institution with its main campus for four-year traditional students in Montreat. The accelerated School of Professional and Adult Studies program has campuses in Asheville, Charlotte, and Black Mountain, with courses being taught in Cherokee, Murphy and other NC locations.
