“Crossroads: The Faith and Culture Project” at Montreat College

Montreat College will host the “Crossroads: The Faith and Culture Project” on November 15th and 16th. The event will incorporate lectures by guest speaker Ken Heffner of Calvin College as well as conversations with and concerts by Andrew Osenga and Randall Goodgame on the 15th and Kellin Wilson on the 16th. Montreat College welcomes Asheville and the surrounding communities to attend this event.

The project recognizes popular arts as powerful media to communicate the human condition, including its beauty and truth. The project has been created to encourage the participants to engage with popular culture and to discern the positive and negative messages it contains, especially as it relates to the Christian faith.

Ken Heffner will speak on the 15th at 11 a.m. in Gaither Chapel. He will also deliver a lecture entitled “Why Wilco Is Important” on the 16th at noon in Gaither Fellowship Hall. Both events are free and open to the public. Heffner regularly speaks at Taylor University, Messiah College, and Wheaton College. He is the Director of the Festival of Faith and Music at Calvin College, where he has served as Director of Student Activities since 1994.

Randall Goodgame and Andy Osenga both live in Nashville, TN. Randall is an accomplished songwriter and musician who has shared the stage with Cademon’s Call, Jars of Clay, Alison Krauss, Lisa Loeb, Sister Hazel, Phil Keaggy and other performers. Osenga is a songwriter and musician who has also worked with Caedmon’s Call. He performs independently and has a small recording studio where he produces his own records and has recorded for Andrew Peterson, Eric Peters, Chris Mason, Randall Goodgame, and members of Caedmon’s Call. Goodgame and Osenga will sit for questions and answers at 4:30 p.m. on the 15th and play a concert at 8 p.m. on the 15th. Both events will be held in Upper Anderson Auditorium.

Western NC native Kellin Watson will also engage Crossroads participants with an artist’s conversation at 4:30 p.m. on the 16th and a concert at 8 p.m. that night in Upper Anderson Auditorium in Montreat. Most recently, Watson’s talent was discovered this summer during the Smashing Pumpkins tour stop in Asheville, when lead singer Billy Corgan heard her at a local restaurant in town. He said, “There are common talents in the world and rare talents. I believe Kellin is a rare and uncommon talent. She has the ability to take you gently by the wrist and make you listen to something.”

Watson’s first full-length independent CD, “Paper Bird,” was released in 2003. A blend of blues, folk, jazz, rock and pop, it features smart, honest lyrics, and was named to WNCW 88.7’s top 100 albums of the year. She was recently featured on Country Music Television’s show “Big Break,” and was chosen from 40 Asheville talents by Sara Evans to open for her at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.

Admission for both concerts will be $5 for the general public. For more information, contact about this event, contact Daniel Bennett at 828.669.8012, ext. 3634 or dbennett@montreat.edu.
