News in Bible and Religion

There are many opportunities for Bible and Religion students at Montreat College to travel and learn outside of the classrooms here on campus. Students will often have the chance to attend special conferences and events with faculty so they will have a real idea of what is going on in the discipline beyond the Montreat gates. Students are currently signing up for a summer course: Biblical Studies Abroad. Students and two faculty members, Dr. Mark Wells and Professor Don Shepson will lead a group of students to Greece this summer for and 11-day tour of some of the major biblical sites in the New Testament

They will walk in many of the Apostle Paul's footsteps with stops at Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, Thessalonica & Philippi and a three-day cruise through the Greek islands and a visit to Patmos where the Apostle John was exiled and had his heavenly vision described in Revelation. Would you like to go? The deadline to sign up is February 29th. Email Professor Shepson at dshepson@montreat.edu for more information.

Students and faculty from Montreat College traveled to Erskine Seminary in Due West, SC this month to attend the 13th Annual Calvin Colloquium. Six panelists presented papers about Calvin's work and life as a pastor. Calvin is so often studied and noted for his scholarship and writings, but experts at the Colloquium gave special attention to Calvin's pastoral abilities and church discipline methods at his church in Geneva. For the Montreat College students who attended and who are about to embark in seminary studies and pastoral careers, this was a great opportunity.

Dr. Mark Wells and a Montreat student will also travel to Columbia for a theology conference titled "Terror, Torture and National Security" early in February.

Senior Nik Franks recently organized the third Toga Party for Montreat students on campus. Participants put on their best togas, and gathered in a dormitory lobby with Montreat Bible and Religion faculty to discuss the deepest questions in life. Over 20 men came out to participate in the 2-hour gathering where the conversation wound its way through questions like "Is smoking a sin?" and "What goes on in hell?" and issues related to an authentic manhood and how to treat women. A similar type discussion event for the women at Montreat College is currently in the planning stages.
