The English Department announced a new course offering this semester: Writing Children's Novels. In this class, participants will have the opportunity to compose 20 pages of original fiction for children.

During the course, students will engage in the practices of published writers: free-writing, keeping a writer's notebook, peer editing, conferencing, imitation, writing in drafts, studying models of great writing, and reading autobiographical material of other authors. This semester the class will be studying major contributions to children's lit by Katherine Paterson, C. S. Lewis, Kate DiCamillo, Madeleine L'Engle, and others.

According to Professor Kimberly Angle, who is teaching the course: "In creative writing courses at Montreat we strive to be a community of writers writing into the possibilities of all we can become through Christ.  This does not mean that we have to be heavy-handed with our theology.  As a Christ-Centered college, we believe that all truth is God's truth.  Thus, when we focus on being true to ourselves, true to our experiences, and true to our voices in our writing, we are turning our minds and ultimately others' minds to what is beautiful and true in God's creation.  The Children's Novel as well as other creative writing courses here at Montreat are designed for participants to realize their potential as writers through exploration of form and cultivation of individual voice and vision."
