DALE H. BRITTON
Academic Writing Award 2005


The Dale H. Britton Academic Writing Award may by presented annually on a competitive basis to a student who exhibits excellence in expository writing. The award is named in honor of Professor Britton’s dedicated service to Montreat College and to the development of students’ effective written communication. This writing award carries a $100 prize, is sponsored by the Writing Center, and the award is presented at Spring Honors Convocation. The rules for competition are as follows:

  1. Competition is open to all full-time, currently enrolled students at Montreat College. Each student may submit only one essay per year. The winner from the previous year and the current Writing Center consultants are not eligible.
     
  2. Any piece of expository writing composed in the current academic year in response to a course assignment may be submitted for competition (there is no restriction as to subject); the signature of the professor of that course will serve as validation. Essays may be revised or expanded by the student before submission.
     
  3. The minimum length is 5 pages, MLA format, Times New Roman 12.
     
  4. Essays should be submitted to the Writing Center Director by April 15, with a cover sheet stating: the student’s name, class level, the name and number of the course in which the essay was originally submitted, and the professor’s validating signature. The student’s name should not appear anywhere else in the essay.
     
  5. Current and/or previous Writing Center consultants will review the essays and select the top three finalists based on writing competency guidelines established by the English Department. These three finalists will then be submitted to a faculty panel to determine the winner.

BONNIE J. LUNDBLAD
Creative Writing Award 2005 – Short Fiction


The Bonnie J. Lundblad Creative Writing Award may be presented annually on a competitive basis to a student who exhibits excellence in creative writing. The award is named in honor of Professor Lundblad’s dedication to the development of Montreat College’s creative writing curriculum and to her timeless devotion to encourage students in effective, imaginative creativity through writing. The competition alternates between Short Fiction and Poetry, beginning with submissions for Short Fiction in 2005. This award carries a $100 prize, is sponsored by the Writing Center, and is presented at Spring Honors Convocation. The rules for competition are as follows:

  1. Competition is open to all full-time, currently enrolled students at Montreat College. Each student may submit only one short story per year. The winner from the previous year and the current Q editors are not eligible.
     
  2. Short Fiction, of any style or genre, composed in the current academic year may be submitted for competition.
     
  3. Entries considered not eligible: previously published work and winners of other writing competitions.
     
  4. The maximum length is 20 pages, MLA format, Times New Roman 12.
     
  5. Entries should be submitted to the Writing Center Director by April 15, with a cover sheet stating: the student’s name, class level, and the date written. The student’s name should not appear anywhere else other than the cover sheet.
     
  6. The current Q editors will review all short fiction entries and select the top three finalists based on creative writing competency guidelines established by the English Department. These three finalists will then be submitted to a faculty panel to determine the winner.
