"But we were gentle among you like a mother caring for her children. We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well . . . For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting, and urging you to live lives worthy of God."—I Thessalonians 2:7-8, 11 These words express my heartfelt desire and mission. As the chaplain at Montreat College, I seek to build friendships with students, staff, and faculty in order to produce disciples of Jesus Christ who are using their God-given gifts and abilities to make a difference in the world. The heart of our life together is worship. Every Thursday morning our Montreat community gathers to engage our minds, emotions, and wills in worship of the living God. This is not a sterile, mandatory exercise but the overflow of a family of faith that seeks to study, serve, and live for the glory of God in every sphere of life. How tempting it is to be lulled by these majestic mountains and to forget about a world in need. Every week many of our students are involved in mission ministry groups that go into the Asheville area to serve others. Whether it's stocking shelves in a food pantry, mentoring kids at the Boys and Girls Club, serving dinner at a homeless shelter, or doing yard work for an elderly person in our community we seek to serve others with the love of Jesus Christ. Each morning as I pass through the Montreat archway, I pray that the next generation of disciples of Jesus Christ: doctors, teachers, pastors, environmental workers, camp directors, and a host of others, will be equipped to extend the Kingdom of God in this world. It is my privilege to be a part of this family of faith that we call Montreat College.
