After winning a hard fought conference battle with Bluefield on Tuesday, expectations were high coming into the King match last night. Some misfortune and inconsistent play turned out to be the deciding factor in the Montreat loss: 25-13, 25-23, and 25-17. A slow start hampered the Lady Cavs in game one; play picked up in games two and three, but King was overpowering up front and played pretty consistent throughout the match. Coach Mooberry commented on the teams play, “We just didn't play well as a team tonight. It's disappointing because our team is really close and enjoys playing together, but that just didn't show tonight.” The Lady Cavs will be on the road this weekend, as they head to the coast, to compete in the Francis Marion Tournament. Their next home contest will be on September 26th against Tennessee Wesleyan in a 6:30pm start.

Coming off their big win over #1 ranked Lindsey Wilson, Montreat got off to an unanticipated start with Asbury College. The clear favorites to win the match, Montreat gave up an early goal just five minutes in; an uncharacteristic, mistimed jump by junior goalkeeper Howard Fisher (Kingston, Jamaica) on a long range shot gave Asbury a 1-0 lead. Montreat would soon take control of the ball; however, they only managed to net two goals in over 30 shot attempts. The best thing that can come from this is know that bad games are going to occur, but good teams find a way to win. Coach Benware gave his thoughts on the game, “Our guys have played some very good soccer lately. We’ve started to gel on the field and have gained some recent confidence with a win against Lindsey Wilson, a national ranking of #16, the national defensive player of the week and offensive/defensive conference players of the week. The guys have handled these successes with humility and are simply preparing for each competition one match at a time. I’m happy to be 5-1 on the season, especially since we’ve had only one home game up to this point. I’m most happy about the depth we have on our team. We have great talent deep into our bench, and there are great benefits from that.”

If you were not in McAlister Gymnasium last night, you missed an electrified atmosphere for a home Lady Cavalier Volleyball match. Montreat’s Lady Cavaliers volleyball team won a hard fought battle last night against Bluefield at McAlister Gymnasium. The Lady Cavs split the first four games: winning the second and fourth, and losing the first and the third forcing a fifth and final game. In a game that is supposed to end at 15, win by two, Montreat and Bluefield took it to overtime, going past the 15 point limit. The two teams went back and forth, exchanging leads multiple times. Finally, Montreat put two successful volleys together and edged the conference foe, Bluefield, 22-20 in the fifth game. Read More

Kansas City, MO --- Five teams enter the Top 25 for the first time this season, including Montreat (NC). The other newcomers to the poll are No. 22 Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.); No.23 Belhaven (Miss.); No. 24 Westmont (Calif.), and No. 25 Lindenwood (Mo.) KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The NAIA Men's Soccer national weekly honors have been announced and Howard Fisher of Montreat (NC.) was announced as National Defensive Player of the Week while Robert Whitnell of Shorter (Ga.) was named National Offensive Player of the Week, for the week of Sept. 8-14. Fisher, a 6-6 junior goalkeeper from Kingston, Jamaica, came up huge last week as the Cavaliers upset the No. 1 team in the country. Fisher saved all six shots on goal as Montreat defeated Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 1-0. The shutout was Fisher’s 22nd of his career. With the win, Montreat improved to 4-1 on the year. On being selected, Fisher remarked, "First I want to thank God for blessing me with the talent to play soccer; also, with the health and strength to go forward. Without him, all of this would not be possible. It is a fabulous feeling. The hard work I have put in in the last 6 years is starting to pay dividends. However, I am still unsatisfied; I have more room to grow. I find it humbling and encouraging as well."

Montreat women’s soccer team fell to Cumberland University last Saturday. Two early first half goals were the deciding factors in Cumberlands victory over Montreat. The Lady Cavaliers played hard but in the end did not have an answer for the Cumberland attack.Coach Maples commented on the game saying, “The same bug keeps biting us. We are giving up soft goals early in a game and never get a chance to get our flow before we are behind. For the first four minutes we had the ball in their half. They get a counter attack, we get back and the only time they get across the half line, they end up with a goal. It takes the wind out of us and we have to regroup. You can see it took the energy out of us because we didn’t start getting shots until later in the first half. We changed some personnel in important spots with 23 minutes left in the first half and our energy picked up. From there the game was ours. CU only got six shots the rest of the game and only one in the second half. Read More

The Montreat College men’s soccer team traveled to Lindsey Wilson College last Saturday, September 13th to face the #1 ranked team in the nation. The Blue Raiders rose to first in the nation early in the week with their smothering defense and tenacious offense, knocking off opponents such as Park University and Lindenwood all with shutouts. Through four games, the Blue Raiders had only allowed 1 goal, and kept their opponents to a total of 11 shots on goal through four games. Montreat too had enjoyed some success going 3-1 through their first four games with two of their wins being shutouts. Though, none of their contests would compare to the 13 year old powerhouse that is Lindsey Wilson College, who has won seven National Championships during that span. Read More
