Men's Soccer Opens Regular Season with a Shutout

The 2008 Montreat Cavaliers Men’s Soccer season opens up with a 3-0 shutout of Emmanuel College. The first official goal did not take long to find the back of the net. Just seven minutes into the match sophomore Adnan Bangura (Freetown, Sierra Leone)finds an open net with assists from Sami Bin (SO, Porto Alegre, Brazil) and Shaka Bangura (JR, Freetown, Sierra Leone). However, that was all of the scoring in the first half. Again, just 5 minutes into the second half sophomore Ebrima Jagne (King E)(Foday Kunda, Gambia) takes a pass from Shaka Bangura and explodes toward the goal placing a low and out of the Emmanuel goalkeeper’s reach, putting the Cavaliers in front 2-0. Then with just 11 minutes left in the match junior Stephen Jackson (Melbourne, FL) nets Montreat’s third goal with assists from Adnan Bangura and Shaka Bangura. The Cavaliers hold off a late Emmanuel surge to maintain the shutout.

Player spotlight for the game Jonathan Viana, who played a great game defensively, had some good thoughts about the team’s performance. “We played well tonight,” said Viana, “but we only had 3 goals and could have done better. Right now we are building as a team and making steady progress towards becoming a very good team.” Viana then states, “Our ultimate team goal is make the national tournament. We have a good team right now, but there is still room to grow.”
New Head Coach Brenton Benware had some good things to say about his team’s victory. “The game was a lot closer than it should have been, but I did see some improvements. This was our first official game and we did control possession of the ball. Shaka (Bangura) had a great showing today as well,” turning in 3 assists. Coach Benware seemed most pleased with the defense saying, “Our defensive unit played really well and I was very happy with that. We still have room to grow and I am excited about things to come.”
As the season progresses, it will be fun to see the team come together. With both Viana and Coach Benware stating the team has “room to grow” the Cavaliers expect a lot out of themselves. The Men’s Soccer team will be heading to Florida next week and will not be back at home in competition until Saturday, September 27th in a 4:00p.m. start with the University of the Cumberlands.
