Late Surge by Men's Soccer Not Enough

Montreat Cavaliers men’s soccer team traveled to Florida on Thursday to take on St. Leo University and Florida Southern University. In last night's game versus St. Leo, Montreat fell behind early and the 2-0 deficit was just too much to overcome in the late game surge as they fell 3-2.

Chad Britts (SR, Clearwater, FL) had the rundown on the game saying, “It was a very tough game. They came out and scored first on what was a questionable call by the center judge. The line judge threw up his flag, to signal offside, but the center judge overruled his call. We had some guys stop because they thought the play was over and they scored.” The half concluded 1-0. Chad continued, “Early in the second half (approx. 4 min in) they [St. Leo] scored another goal to go up 2-0. Then midway through we started to put it together. Adnan Bangura (SO, Freetown, Sierra Leone) broke through and put us [Montreat] on the board.” St. Leo responded by scoring off a corner kick, but Montreat answered with a Jon Viana (SR, Clearwater, FL) header off a Shaka Bangura (JR, Freetown, Sierra Leone) corner kick. Britts had some closing thoughts on the game, “We just ran out of time (falling 3-2). The team showed good heart by never giving up and scratching back into the game. We played well late but we have to get it going early as well.”

Montreat will be back in action tomorrow night at 7:00 pm against Florida Southern University in the conclusion of their two game Florida trip, but will have five more road games before returning home to face the University of the Cumberlands on September 27th in a 4:00 pm start at the Black Mountain campus.
