Women's Soccer Opens Season with a 2-1 Victory

It did not take long for the Montreat Lady Cavaliers’ Soccer team to score their first goal of the season. Only two minutes passed before junior Lucy White (Northport, AL) netted her first goal of the season off a Heather Hable (SR, Stuart, VA) pass. Twenty minutes later, Emmanuel comes back to ruin the shutout with a, Lauren Moore, goal to tie the game at 1-1. The game would remain tied for the remainder of the first half. Most of the possession in the second half would be with the Lady Cavs and at the 31:38 mark, (Lucy) White would net her second goal of the game off an assist from freshman Brittany Zachrich (Hickory, NC). Charges by Emmanuel were shut down by some stellar Lady Cavs defense and a couple big saves by true freshman goalkeeper, Sarah McGuirt (Harmony, NC).

New Head Coach Don Maples had some good thing to say about his Lady Cavaliers after the win, "I was extremely proud of how the girls played. I know they were nervous coming in with no preseason games and a new system of play being used. We had some confusion in our defensive organization early on that led to their first goal. But once we settled down and organized ourselves we played well. I believe the difference in the game was our pressure defense and how well we possessed the ball. They couldn't effectively deal with all the pressure we had them under. [This is a] great way for the team to open the season".

The Lady Cavs season opener results in a 2-1 victory and their first game showed signs of good things to come. They will be in action again at home on Saturday, September 6th against Atlanta Christian College in a 5:00p.m. start.
