Atlanta Christian Shutout by Montreat Attack 9-0

Montreat women’s soccer team won big on Saturday defeating Atlanta Christian 9-0. The Lady Cavaliers took 28 shots and placed 20 of those on goal; and, added 11 assists to their nine goals. Heather Hable (SR, Stuart, VA) scored the first goal of the game off a Stephanie Liles (FR, Morganton, NC) assist. Then just one minute later, Liles added a goal of her own on an assist from Brittany Zachrich (FR, Hickory, NC) assist. The half ended at 2-0 but Montreat was just about to break loose. Three minutes into the second half Zachrich scored her first goal of the contest, unassisted. One minute later, Zachrich scored again on a Heather Hable assist making the score 4-0.

Halfway through the second Hable scored again, on a header, off of a Zachrich corner kick. Then, Liles scored again off a Katie Kovarik (JR, Clayton, NC) assist. Zachrich then completed her hat-trick with an assist from Alex Mash (FR, Cooper City, FL). The assist was not enough for Mash as she adds a goal off an assist from Zachrich with 11 minutes to go. The final goal of the game came with 0.46 seconds to go when Katie Kovarik, assist from Hable, netted her first goal and the teams last of the match.

Coach Don Maples was pleased with his team’s play saying, “This was a nice way to come out and play coming off a loss. The girls had some goals for this game they wanted to meet. From what they told me, they met them. This was the best we have played. The backs on defense moved as unit, people were moving to the right spots on the field at the right times, passes were made on time and accurately, we looked to penetrate through ACC’s back lines like we should and we kept it simple. After the loss on Wednesday we had a team meeting on for two and half hours on Thursday. It was in a classroom and we went over just about every detail of our attack and our defense. The girls asked questions, they got answers and it seems as if, at least today, we are starting to understand more about how each player builds into how we play. Atlanta Christian played a tough game and as always showed total class. They fought for every ball and their goalkeeper did a great job. Today we were on and we have enough talent and athletes that when we are on we can be a very dangerous team. Now we look to continue against North Greenville on Wednesday.”
