Lady Cavs Pick Up First Win; Defeat Wise

The Lady Cavaliers volleyball team earned their first win of the season last night against conference opponent, UVA-Wise. Wise was selected fourth in the preseason poll and coming off a berth to the NAIA Volleyball Tournament last season. A balanced attack up front and in the backcourt allowed Montreat to sweep in three with scores of 28-26, 25-15, 25-17. Allie Baumgartner (SO, Charlotte, NC) and Brandy Deddo (FR, Almond, NC) had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Natalie Nieman (FR, Charlotte, NC) and Lyndsey Wall (JR, Weddington, NC) had eight digs apiece. Nieman also added 29 assists and Baumgartner had seven aces.

Coach Mooberry added her thoughts on the victory, “We struggled to pull ourselves together well the first set, but winning that first set I believe was very important for us mentally. We were excited to get our first overall and conference win tonight.  The girls really pulled together as a team in the second and third set.  I saw some real ownership and leadership from our freshman tonight, they don’t allow being young to be an excuse for them.  They expect a lot out of themselves because they are capable of a lot.   That’s one of our goals, to push to be our best and not let others or ourselves expect less just because we are young.”

The Lady Cavs will be back in action on Saturday, September 6th at Salem College in a double-header against Spelman College at 4pm and then against the host Salem College at 6pm
