After winning a hard fought conference battle with Bluefield on Tuesday, expectations were high coming into the King match last night. Some misfortune and inconsistent play turned out to be the deciding factor in the Montreat loss: 25-13, 25-23, and 25-17. A slow start hampered the Lady Cavs in game one; play picked up in games two and three, but King was overpowering up front and played pretty consistent throughout the match. Coach Mooberry commented on the teams play, “We just didn't play well as a team tonight. It's disappointing because our team is really close and enjoys playing together, but that just didn't show tonight.” The Lady Cavs will be on the road this weekend, as they head to the coast, to compete in the Francis Marion Tournament. Their next home contest will be on September 26th against Tennessee Wesleyan in a 6:30pm start.

The Montreat Cavaliers volleyball team traveled this weekend for conference play, first at Covenant College on Friday and then at Bryan College on Saturday. Both matches ended after three games, as Montreat could not get the momentum swung in their direction. Coach Mooberry on the Covenant match, "We really struggled as a team passing tonight against Covenant, which made it hard to run an effective offense. Covenant has a good program, some strong hitters and quick defense. We needed to play well tonight to beat Covenant, but our intensity and communication was also not what it needed to be. My hope is that we will be able to step up our game when they come visit us at Montreat and play with the intensity, communication, and solid skills to beat them." Read More

The 2007 Volleyball season has come to a close at this weekend’s AAC Tournament. The Lady Cavs lost to Bryan College in three straight games, 25-30, 11-30, and 25-30. “It’s disappointing to lose like this,” said Coach Gehris, “but our girls have never played this well against Bryan, so it was positive to see them play as well as they did. We wish our seniors well and we’ll miss them dearly. Now, it’s time to look to the future. It’s time to focus on our preseason and our recruiting. We have some great returners, and we will look to add some more solid student-athletes to better our program.” And better it will be- with solid returners like two-time NAIA Region Player of the Week Allison Baumgartner- the future is very bright. It showed they didn’t quit. Hopefully, with this win, it will allow us to have a good seed going into the tournament.” The Lady Scots' front row had an unbearable time defending Ally Baumgartner’s 31 kills for the evening. This is the type of game and tempo that Coach Gehris has been waiting to see. The Lady Cavs played what Gehris called “Montreat Volleyball” all night and sent Bluefield College home in three straight games, 30-18, 30-15, and 30-14. “This was Montreat Volleyball the entire match. No matter who we play, I like to see us play our game and not our opponent's. Everyone contributed to this win,” said Gehris. Bluefield found no answer for Ally Baumgartner’s 20 kills on the night. Danny Bowers also contributed 10 kills and 11 digs, while Lyndsey Wall added 10 digs of her own and 35 assists. Read More

Montreat volleyball found its rhythm last night in front of another energetic Cavalier crowd as they defeated UVA-Wise, 26-30, 30-22, 32-30, and 30-24. “The girls played phenomenal tonight,” praised Head Coach Leslie Gehris, “It was great to see them play like this tonight. If we can continue this level of play, the girls can surprise some teams at the AAC tournament. From the beginning of the match, this was a solid and consistent effort.” The Lady Cavs are now 12-17 overall and 5-11 in the AAC as they dropped an earlier match this week to Bryan College. Leaders for Montreat were Danny Bowers with 14 kills, 10 digs, and 4 solo blocks. Finding her first triple-double of the season, Rebekah Henderson earned 12 kills, 14 digs, and 10 service aces. Coach Gehris’ concern after the Bryan match was her team’s ability to defend. Her team provided great defense as they Bowers and Ally Baumgartner combined for 8 solo blocks against the Lady Cavs of UVA-Wise. Read More

Danny Bowers demonstrated tremendous senior leadership tonight. She did a fantastic job for us." Bowers earned 12 kills and 14 digs against the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Cavs dropped another AAC match on the road, falling to Virginia Intermont in a tough five set match, 30-25, 30-23, 20-30, 24-30, 6-15. The Lady Cavs have struggled on the road while playing AAC matches, winning only one this season against Tennessee Wesleyan back in early September. Danny Bowers and Rebekah Henderson once again led the offensive attack by tallying 15 kills a piece. Read More

When things aren't going well, teams tend to look toward their star players to step up and lead- the Lady Cavs, in the midst of finding a consistent winning formula, has witnessed the emergence of Ally Baumgartner's potential. "Ally pretty much carried our team tonight. She is a phenomenal athlete,” admitted Head Coach Leslie Gehris, “she is really leading this team. Today’s win was sloppy, but it was positive in the sense that certain players stepped into other roles and played well. But, right now, Ally is really getting the job done.” Behind Baumgartner, Montreat defeated North Greenville University in three straight games, 30-15, 30-20, and 30-20. Baumgartner was credited with 19 kills, 1 solo block, 1 block assist, and 4 service aces against the Crusaders (2-22 record). “We have three tough conference games on the road; so, come Monday, we have to get back to work to prepare for Milligan,” added Gehris. Montreat Volleyball squared off against a determined King College last night at McAlister Gymnasium. With most of the Lady Cavalier squad in better health, Head Coach Leslie Gehris was optimistic about this matchup. However, King College proved to be too much for the Lady Cavs as they fell to their 7th conference loss, 23-30, 21-30, 30-25, and 24-30. Montreat seemed to show signs of life in most games as they played admirably throughout the 20 point margin. “We have to learn to finish off these games,” said a frustrated Coach Gehris, “We have to learn to get ahead on these good teams and finish them off… we need to show this conference what Montreat volleyball is all about- in order to earn respect, we have to finish off matches.” As with most home games, Montreat fed off its home crowd to pull off the third game, but it just couldn’t find the formula to stop King’s front row. “We have to continue to prepare for our post season,” added Gehris, “in order to do so, we have to find a few more wins.” Read More

It seems as though the two day rest period Coach Gehris offered her ladies may have served the Montreat volleyball team well, as they defeated Brenau University this Saturday in three straight games. "Today's match was a great team effort," boasted Head Coach Leslie Gehris, "we had our freshmen step up and play some great roles today... the leadership of our seniors was stellar as well." The Lady Cavs sent Brenau University home in a three game match, 30-19, 30-14, and 30-24. Leading the offense was Danny Bowers and Allison Baumgartner, recording 15 and 16 kills apiece against the Lady Tigers. Baumgartner also recorded 3 solo blocks for the match. Head Coach Leslie Gehris gave her Lady Cavalier volleyball team two days off in order to regroup and think about what needs to be addressed prior to this Saturday's match. "Right now, I'm not sure what team will show up on the court. Stephanie Hosack had a tremendous game, possibly her best of the year. We need solid and consistent performances like that day in and day out. I think they needed a break to regroup," said Coach Gehris. The Lady Cavs have shown spurts of greatness along the way, though with freshman star Rebekah Henderson out sick, Montreat has been forced to shift positions around and find a winning formula. The Lady Cavs really enjoy playing at McAlister Gymnasium. For the second time this season, Montreat has sent a conference team home in three straight games while playing at McAlister, and they also played the AAC's number one ranked Union College very close in front of their home crowd. This past Saturday, during their Homecoming match against Tennessee Wesleyan College, Montreat gave their alumni and their faithful fans a three game sweep of their conference foe, 30-22, 30-23, and 30-26. “Today was another great team effort, especially coming off our loss to UV-Wise,” said Head Coach Leslie Gehris, “We had to change a few positions around and it was great to see different players step up in different roles… that was great for them to adjust the way they did. I hope we can carry this momentum into next week.” Read More

“Tonight was a very poor effort by our part,” said Coach Leslie Gehris, “we didn’t have Rebekah Henderson tonight, and it seemed like we just didn’t have it together.” The Lady Cavs fell to UVA-Wise in three straight games, 14-30, 15-30, and 25-30. “I was rather disappointed,” added Gehris, “we are coming off some solid wins, so I am disappointed. We now have to regroup and climb out of this hole.” Montreat’s limited offense came by Danny Bowers’ 10 kills. Defensively, Addie McHenry earned 8 digs for the night, while Bowers dug 9 of her own. Unfortunately, a team’s season is often judged by wins and losses. And although Montreat’s volleyball team stands at 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, one would have to watch these ladies in action to see that “winning” is certainly taking place. Montreat hosted the conference’s top team in Union College this past Saturday at the McAlister Gymnasium, falling to Union in four games, 28-30, 25-30, 30-24, and 24-30. Though falling short, this match demonstrated the character of the Lady Cavs as they played each ball as if it were their last. Each point, won or lost, was concluded with sincere hand-clapping and high-fives for the effort the team put into it. “Today was a great team effort. We played Union very tight, and I think we gave them a scare,” said Head Coach Leslie Gehris, “we never gave up, and I hope we carry this momentum to the rest of the season.” Read More

The Lady Cavs made Toccoa Falls College their 7th win this season by taking them in three straight games, 30-17, 30-14, and 30-21. “This was a much needed win,” said Head Coach Leslie Gehris, “it could have been better, but we know what we have to practice on for our upcoming Union match this Saturday.” Defensively, Jessica Huntley once again demonstrated her senior leadership by tallying 19 digs against the Lady Eagles. Freshman Clair Sellers also had a standout night for Montreat by adding four solo blocks to her season’s stats. Read More

Coach Gehris was excited to play a conference game at home… VIC found out why. On a bus ride home from one of their recent road trip games, freshman middle-blocker Allison Baumgartner took out her laptop and composed what Head Coach Leslie Gehris described as “a team challenge.” “Ally wrote a strong team challenge and shared it with her teammates. In short, she challenged her teammates to demonstrate passion, heart, and desire each and every play,” said Gehris. At this weekend’s Union College Volleyball Tournament, the Lady Cavs rose to their teammate’s challenge in what turned out to be a demanding test of conditioning. Playing five matches in two days was a major test of fitness for Montreat, with two matches going the brutal five-set distance. “I felt our girls played great and demonstrated how well-conditioned they are. Our first two matches were five-setters, and they really relied on their fitness.” Not only did they rely on their fitness, they called upon Baumgartner’s fervent words to keep their “passion, heart, and desire”- which are ingredients often needed to win most five-setters. The Lady Cavs put together a solid effort against NCAA D-II Mars Hill but fell short in 3 straight games, 24-30, 28-30, and 20-30. “Overall, we gave a much better effort in playing a good D-II team,” said Head Coach Leslie Gehris. “I hope we can carry this effort into our Region XII tournament that begins next week. I hope we can play as well during the tournament, or better.” Individual leaders for Montreat were Danny Bowers with 7 kills, Allison Baumgartner with 5 kills of her own. Delivering those assists was Lyndsey Wall, earning 13 assists for the match. Defensively, Jessica Hartley once again had a great match as she added 17 more digs to her season's stats. Read More

Danny Bowers and Allison Baumgartner combined for 22 kills for the Lady Cavs; however, it was not enough to hold off AAC conference foe Bluefield College, as Montreat fell to the Lady Rams in three straight games, 27-30, 27-30, 25-30. Coming off of a solid win against AAC opponent Tennessee Wesleyan, the Lady Cavs were looking forward to this Bluefield match. The loss however gives Montreat a combined record of 3-6 and 1-4 in the AAC. Nonetheless, Coach Leslie Gehris felt the loss had its bright moments, “All in all, we played poorly as a team. But, our passing game has improved, but we just couldn’t put the ball away. We weren’t smart with our hitting decisions.” Read More

Seniors Stephanie Hosack really helped put the ball away and Allison Williams, our middle-blocker did a fine job defending.” Read More

Lyndsey Wall also had a stand out match as she recorded 41 assists to her season’s stats. Allison Baumgartner, once again, led Montreat’s hitters with 19 kills for the match. Read More
