Dr. Jeff Teo is a receipient of the 2009-10 Rotary International for Overseas University Professor grant. As a Rotary International Scholar, Dr. Teo will be teaching and researching during the summer of 2009 at Xiamen University, the top comprehensive university in China. While he will be teaching in English, Dr. Teo's familarity and proficiencies in Mandarin, Hokkien, and Teochew will aid in his role as a goodwill ambassador performing community service projects to benefit the local communities in Fujian Province and elsewhere.

Dr. Jeff Teo's chapter contribution on trusted computing will be published in this text Cyber Security and Global Information Assurance: Threat Analysis and Response Solutions Following is an abstract of his chapter.

To effectively combat cyber threats, our network defenses must be equipped to thwart dangerous attacks. However, our software-dominated defenses are woefully inadequate. The Trusted Computing Group has embarked on a mission to use an open standards-based interoperability framework utilizing both hardware and software implementations to defend against computer attacks. Specifically, this group uses trusted hardware called the trusted platform module (TPM) in conjunction with TPM-enhanced software to provide better protection against such attacks. This chapter will detail a brief history of trusted computing, the goals of the Trusted Computing Group and the workings of trusted platforms.

Dr. Jeff Teo secured a grant for the college from Cisco, the world's largest manufacturer of computer networking equipment. With all of the recent news about security breaches and computer viruses, as well as a lack of well-qualified IT professionals who can effectively secure information systems, Dr. Teo sought and received a Faculty Research Grant that resulted in the development of information security curricula and a new course taught this spring entitled: Introduction to Information Security. Dr. Teo's work, funded by a Faculty Research Grant, led him to the discovery of the Cisco Equipment Grant, worth about $25,000. As part of his application for the Cisco grant, Dr. Teo submitted his research on the development of information security curricula, and the grant was awarded in the fall of 2006.

The Cisco Equipment Grant provides CIS majors with three routers, two firewalls and Virtual Private Network (VPN) appliances and one 24 port switch - all used in virtually any network CIS students will encounter as IT professionals. The grant stipulates that the equipment be used by students to assist them in gaining skills needed to design, configure, maintain, and monitor these devices in a network.

Dr. Teo's research grant was renewed for summer 2007 so that he could expand on last year's research. Kris Allen, who served as strategic planning consultant to the college, says, "The information security/information assurance curriculum Dr. Teo proposes currently has strong market demand and will be attractive to potential students, especially ones seeking a Christ-centered education, because of the limited offering of similar curricula at other Christian colleges".
