Internships in Business or CIS
As described in the College Catalog, the internship "provides the student with the opportunity to integrate classroom instruction with on-the-job learning in an area associated with their concentration." Every Business Administration and Computer Information Systems major is required to complete an internship prior to graduation. Most students complete the internship during the summer between their junior and senior year. The student is ultimately responsible for seeking and arranging the internship of his/her choice in the declared field of concentration. Each student should discuss internship possibilities with his/her academic advisor as soon as the major is declared so that there will be plenty of time to arrange the best possible and meaningful internship.
The following procedures are to be complied with for all internships within the Business Administration and Computer Information Systems Department:
Students desiring to fulfill an internship will complete an Internship Registration form that can be obtained from the Registrar’s office. The form should be taken to the student’s academic advisor for guidance and approval. This form must then be submitted to the Registrar’s office for formal registration. Students completing internships will be billed by the Business Office for the three-unit course.
Internships will be for a minimum of 180 hours for 3 credit hours.
Student responsibilities are as follows:
• Identify an internship in a field related to the student’s concentration.
• Identify a Business or Computer Information Systems faculty sponsor.
• Register for BS 441 during Spring semester pre-registration noting the internship as "Summer" in the section number block.
• Complete the Internship Checklist and return it to the faculty sponsor.
• In conjunction with the faculty sponsor, establish objectives and goals for the internship (personal and professional).
• Maintain a journal during the internship with observations on objective and goal achievement, interpersonal relationships, and lessons learned.
• Have their field supervisor complete an evaluation form.
• Submit an end-of-term report (10-15 pages) to their faculty sponsor detailing objective and goal achievement and lessons learned from the internship.
Faculty Sponsor responsibilities:
• Review the Internship Registration Form and ensure that the internship has been approved and that the student has registered for the course (BS 441) during the Spring semester.
• In conjunction with the student intern, establish objectives and goals for the internship (personal and professional).
• Contact (in person, or by phone, if personal contact is impractical) the intern’s intended field supervisor before the internship begins to discuss objectives and goals.
• Follow the initial contact with a letter outlining the objectives of the internship and requesting an end-of-term evaluation.
• Make at least two more contacts with the field supervisor to evaluate progress of the internship.
• Receive the field supervisor’s evaluation.
• Review the student intern’s journal, end-of-term paper, and the supervisor’s evaluation and assign a course grade of PASS or FAIL.
Field Supervisor responsibilities:
• Assign the student intern responsibilities leading to new learning in the area of academic concentration and leading to achievement of objectives and goals.
• Prepare an end-of-term evaluation and submit the report to the faculty sponsor.
