Get ready to spend a week exploring one of the most ecologically diverse regions of the Southern Appalachian Mountains as you embark on a beautiful backpacking adventure! Your expedition will begin at the summit of Mount Mitchell, highest peak east of the Mississippi River, and meander through the backcountry, returning to our basecamp in Montreat. Along the way, you will learn about the unique forest ecosystems resident to this area, and collect and analyze your own data to find out why so many diverse communities are distributed in such close proximity. As we travel, you will also learn about the animals that call these forests home, examining animal tracks, exploring the inhabitants of headwater streams and capturing macro-invertebrates for close inspection. We welcome you to come have fun, make new friends, live and play in the outdoors, and experience science in a whole new way!
