Service Learning at Montreat College

“SALT was the best experience of my life. I truly needed to go because it opened my eyes to what the world is like outside of our little comfort zone.”
– Josh DaVine, Montreat College student
Montreat College students engage in service and outreach through a variety of avenues, including academic courses, athletic teams, and the chaplain’s office. Through the chaplain’s office, students serve in the following initiatives:
New Student Orientation: As an introduction to Montreat College’s mission and our local community, all new students participate in service across the community. In 2009, nearly 150 students served at ten different organizations in Montreat, Black Mountain, and Asheville.
SALT Retreat: Each fall, 40 to 50 students immerse themselves in Asheville during the annual SALT Retreat. Students serve the homeless community while deepening their understanding of homelessness in experiential ways.
SALT team service opportunities: Each month, a student leadership team devoted to service (SALT), organizes and facilitates a campus-wide service opportunity as well as service days with local organizations.
Community Partnerships through the Work Program: Montreat College’s Work Program includes work positions at local organizations. This creates strong, on-going partnerships with our community. Students work at various organizations each week for 7 to 8 hours.
Awareness Week: Each year students organize an awareness week around a current social justice issue (such as modern slavery and sex trafficking), which includes guest speakers, discussion groups, film screenings, fundraisers and concludes with a day of service at a local organization.
