Writing Center FAQ
How do I arrange a consulting session?
Just walk in during open hours, 6:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m., Sunday-Thursday.
What should I bring to a consulting session?
Please bring a copy of your assignment and any work--even scattered notes--you have done, as well as any sources or materials you're using. The Writing Center is equipped with a computer, so you can bring your draft on disk, if you like.
What can I expect in a consulting session?
First, the consultant will ask you some questions about your assignment or your purpose for writing. Then, the consultant will ask you what specific areas of concern you have. Next, the consultant will read what you've written so far and discuss with you some strategies for improvement, addressing your concerns as well as identifying some of the patterns of error and showing you how to avoid them.
How can a consultant help me?
Consultants help writers: understand an assignment, generate ideas, develop a thesis, analyze audience, organize and develop ideas, revise a draft, and improve proofreading and editing skills. Consultants do not, however, proofread, edit, ghostwrite, or research any writer's work. Each session is a collaborative effort in which the writer is in an active dialogue with the consultant.
What if I can't visit the Writing Center?
Although we prefer face-to-face consultation, electronic and phone consultation are also available.
Is it free?
Yes. Consulting is provided free of charge to all Montreat students--take advantage of it!
Do you help only with papers assigned in courses?
We're happy to work with you on any writing project you have: essays, cover letters, resumes, application essays, reports, proposals, etc. The only exceptions are tests.
Will you proofread and edit my paper?
No, we will not "fix" your errors, but we will work with you to help you recognize and repair your own technical errors. And we will direct writers toward resource materials for documentation style, citation, grammar, punctuation, etc.
Is the Writing Center designed only for novice writers?
Absolutely not. We work with freshmen on their first essays and with seniors completing final theses.
Any writer can benefit from a reader's response.
Will my professor know that I visited the Writing Center?
Yes. We notify your professor that you have come in and are getting help with your writing.
Who are the writing consultants?
The writing consultants are friendly, helpful, Montreat College students who have been trained to assist you in all stages of the writing process.
