MEGA - A two-week expedition on the Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a 2,175 mile footpath that stretches from Maine (ME) to Georgia (GA)  – combine the two state abbreviations and you get MEGA. Plus, this backpacking trip is two weeks in duration (mega long) and students will participate in the MEGA-Transect (an AT science monitoring program). In the MEGA-Transect program, students will collect real-life data on the trail that will be used by the National Park Service to determine the health and future of the trail.

Hike and camp for two weeks on the AT. Spend time in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Visit the Cherokee Indian Reservation in North Carolina. Collect and analyze plant, animal, and weather data from each ecosystem and work with group members to determine the health of various ecosystems. Have fun, sleep under the stars, and learn few things along the way.
