Montreat College believes that Stewardship is a Biblical mandate for believers and therefore a matter of the heart; fundraising generally is not a heart matter. The preferred manner of obtaining funds for ministry needs through the Stewardship process is asking people to support by donations and or outright gifts. Therefore, it is the desire of the College that fundraising be managed properly.
Fundraising approval depends on the following:
1. Who will be involved in raising the funds?
- Montreat students should first gain approval from a department head and/or their advisor. Then contact the VP of Advancement for approval.
- It has been proven for best results and for better accountability that one person drive the fundraiser and report to a department head, advisor or staff member.
2. Define the purpose for raising funds.
- What will the funds be used for? Provide a detailed list of items for which a fundraiser is necessary to purchase.
- How will the department raise the funds (method, sources, process, etc.)? Outline the procedure, including timing (how long the fundraiser will last), and determine expenses involved (i.e. buying a product to sell.)
3. A determination of frequency and necessity are critical to any fundraising effort.
- Too many fundraising efforts often times dilute the overall objective and send a less desirable message to those who are watching what we do.
- How much money is expected to come in as a result of this fundraising effort? Is my time invested rewarded by a reasonable return? (Example: To have 6 people spending 1 hour to raise $50 may not be the most productive use of the group’s time.)
- Do I really need a fundraiser or can this item be purchased inside my budget?
4. Does our fundraising effort impact or undermine any other department at Montreat?
- This is a subjective determination, but is one of sensitivity.
5. Is there any advertising involved for the fundraiser?
- In an effort to maintain the highest quality perception of Montreat College, both on and off campus, all materials used for promoting a fundraiser must be approved by the department head and if necessary with the consultation of the VP for Advancement.
- Standards should be maintained at a high level in both presentation and content.
